The recent elevation of Gordon Brown to Prime Minister provides a good opportunity to remind ourselves of just how little he did with Inheritance Tax during his reign as Chancellor of the Exchequer.
Mr Brown's lack of activity has brought many, if not most homeowners within
reach of the Inheritance Tax threshold. The ever spiralling rise in property
values means that, if we dare to take no action, the first guest at the
reading of our Will is likely to be the man from the Inland Revenue.
Doing nothing will mean that up to 40% of the value of your assets over and
above the £300,000 allowance will simply end up in the coffers of the Inland
Revenue.
Obviously there can be a natural reluctance for many of us to contemplate
the end of our lives but, a moment's reflection upon the effort we have put
into building up our assets, should spark the desire to ensure that they
end up where we intended them too.
Every family is different so whilst we cannot provide you with an
'off-the-shelf' solution, we can offer you our considerable experience of
the many different ways in which our clients have tackled this problem.
We shall be talking to you about Inheritance Tax during the course of your
next Annual Review but, we are naturally very happy to discuss your personal
situation at any other time of your choosing.
